Cosmetic Surgery for a Receding Hairline

One of the most frustrating things for patients in terms of their appearance can be a receding hairline, thinning hair, or baldness. The truth is that topical treatments such as Rogaine will only reduce or stop hair loss for a limited number of people. Fortunately, there are permanent solutions available through cosmetic surgery to offset these problems. A plastic surgeon or hair restoration doctor can discuss these options with you to help find a solution that will best meet your needs. Below are some of those options for dealing with hair loss.

Hairline browlift: In this procedure, an incision is made between the hairline and the upper forehead; the forehead skin can then be lifted upward and sutured at the hairline. This procedure is particularly successful for patients with a high forehead and/or a receding hairline because the hairline is not pushed back. Additionally, because the brows are lifted further up the face, it gives the appearance of a shorter forehead. Furthermore, because the skin is re-attached at the hairline, the scars will not be as noticeable as they might be with other types of browlift or facelift surgeries.

Hair restoration: This cosmetic option is better suited to patients with either full or partial baldness. Depending on the type of baldness (frontal baldness only; front to crown; front and mid-scalp with no thinning at the crown; or crown only), your doctor will chose donor sites for the transplants or grafting. The donor site, which is where the new hair will be taken, is usually at the side or back of the scalp. Light-colored and coarse hair will work better than will dark or fine hair for producing a denser look to the transplanted hair.

There are two types of procedures that can be done: grafting or follicular unit transplantation. In grafting, a strip of scalp from the donor site is divided into hundreds of smaller grafts, and then inserted back into the scalp at the recipient site (where the hair is bald or thinning).

In follicular unit transplantation, the entire hair-bearing unit, including blood vessels, sebaceous (oil) glands, nerves and tissue, is used. Under a microscope, groups of one to four hairs at a time are implanted into the recipient site. The advantage of this procedure over grafting is that many more grafts can be done at once, and the appearance is usually much more natural looking. Of course, your doctor will advise you on which one of these two methods will work best in your particular case.

Ultimately, of course, the decision is up to you. People may say that thinning, balding, or receding hair is just what happens as you get older. Fortunately, you don t have to accept that any more. There are now options available to you that can help you look younger, fresher, and more revitalized.
